25 October, 2021 – Team Malaysia has confirmed its participation in the FIA Motorsports Games later this month, with the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) and Axle Sports confirming entries into two disciplines at the event to be held in Marseille, France.
Malaysia will be represented by Naquib Azlan, 22, and Alister Yoong, 19. Both are accomplished drivers both in the virtual world and on track.
Naqib will compete in Fanatec Esports discipline, which will be contested on the Assetto Corsa Competizione platform with a bespoke virtual build of the Circuit Paul Ricard track while Yoong will compete against the leading stars in Formula 4 in a hybrid single-seater.
“We are very proud to be sending homegrown drivers to what is considered the Olympics of Motorsports. I believe Naquib and Alister have what it takes to compete with the best in the world, and the Motorsport Games is the perfect opportunity to showcase up and coming motorsport talent from Southeast Asia.” said Alex Yoong, Team Malaysia Captain and Founder of Axle Sports.
Naqib recently clinched the Sporting Class Championship at the Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia Festival, winning five out of six races in the competition. He also has numerous sim racing accolades including championship wins at the MAM APAC Circuit Racing Champion and the E-racing category at the inaugural South East Asia Esports Championship earlier this year.
Alister heads to France fresh with a win at the Caterham Motorsports South East Asia Championship under his belt as well as two seasons of racing in Formula 4 South East Asia.
“We are excited to be presented this opportunity by the FIA. Both Naquib and Alister definitely have the talents for an exciting race in Marseille.” said Muizz Azli, Secretary-General for the Motorsports Association of Malaysia.
This is the second time Malaysia will compete at the FIA Motorsports Games. At the inaugural event in 2019, Team Malaysia, represented by 2019 eRacing GP winner Mior Muhamad Hafiz, finished 8th in the Digital Cup. Prior to that, Malaysia finished 8th in the GT3 class at the 2018 FIA GT Nations Cup held at the Bahrain International Circuit.
The FIA Motorsport Games is a unique multidisciplinary event that sees drivers competing in the colours of their national flag. Organised by SRO Motorsports Group in partnership with the FIA, the event return for its second running from 26-30 October 2022 with a significantly expanded number of 17 disciplines. Marseille is the confirmed host city, while Circuit Paul Ricard will provide the racing venue.
