September 24, 2023KUALA LUMPUR, 12 September 2023 – The inaugural Asia Pacific Motorsport Championship (APMC), slated to be held at Sepang International Circuit from Sept 30 to Oct 1, is poised to revolutionise the motorsport scene in the region.
Created with the mission to provide a more accessible platform for enthusiasts, teams, and drivers, APMC promises to showcase the best in the region within various motorsport disciplines. Taking inspiration from the successful biennial FIA Motorsport Games, APMC aims to eliminate barriers and provide cost-effective access to motorsport excellence. By doing so, it offers a unique opportunity for emerging talents to gain recognition on a grander scale.
Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) President, Tan Sri Mokhzani Tun Mahathir said the championship is not just about the thrill of the race.
“As organisers of the inaugural championship, we are pleased to have been selected by the FIA to host and action-packed weekend of motorsport excitement, showcasing the region’s top talents. This nomination is testament to us in MAM and Malaysia as a whole to be a leading contributor in the growth and development of Motorsports in the Asia Pacific Region.
“APMC is all about opening doors to an international stage, allowing competitors to share their passion and skills with a wider audience. Teams, drivers, and participants will benefit from the exposure and experience that only an event of this magnitude can provide,” he said.
Five disciplines will be held under the National Competition Rules of the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM), incorporating the FIA International Sporting Code. The five disciplines are Karting, Karting Slalom, Auto-Gymkhana, Rally, and e-Sports. 23 countries participating in the APMC will vie for the gold medal in each event as the medal tally will be used to determine the overall winners. The team manager for Team
Malaysia over the two-day event will be the highly experienced and former Formula1 Development Driver and FIA World Endurance Championship Race Winner, Jazeman Jaafar.
FIA President, Mohamed Ben Sulayem expressed his enthusiasm for APMC’s significance in the motorsports landscape of the Asia Pacific region. “We saw how successful the FIA Motorsport Games has been in the past few years, and it’s a fantastic initiative to have that same concept now in the Asia Pacific region,” he said.
“With the biennial FIA Motorsport Games not being held this year, this is also a great opportunity for competitors to showcase their skills for potential opportunities when the Games return next year.”
FIA Vice-President for Sport (Asia-Pacific), Lee Lung Nien is pleased to welcome another world-class motorsport event in the region where accessibility meets excellence. “Whether you’re a motorsport enthusiast, a team manager, or a driver aspiring for global recognition, this will be a great opportunity for grassroots competitors to represent their country on the international stage,” he said.
